Natural Health’s Oats Bran
Oat bran is the outer layer of the oat grain, packed with fiber and nutrients. It’s commonly used in smoothies, porridge, baking, or sprinkled over yogurt and cereal.
Oats are technically gluten-free since they aren’t a type of wheat, barley or rye grain, the three groups of whole grains that naturally contain the protein gluten. Instead of containing gluten, oats actually have a protein called avenins.
What makes Oats Gluten free?
Although they don’t contain gluten naturally, the more common problem with oats is gluten contamination. This usually occurs in mills where oats are processed along with other grains. For an oat product to be certified as gluten-free, the producer has to strictly follow the set standards from planting all the way to store shelves. People that have a high sensitivity to gluten, will then possibly react to oats that have been contaminated with other gluten products.
Soaking oats overnight and drinking lots of water can also help to get rid of digestive problems. Like all other whole grains, soaking oats helps reduce anti-nutrients and enzymes that can mess with nutrient absorption and digestion.
